Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was the #4 ranked linebacker in standard IDP scoring leagues in 2013. He played parts of five injury plagued games in 2014 before the Bengals mercifully shelved him.
Now, in Week 8 of 2015, he takes the field for the first time in a year. It’s only expected that he’ll play 10-20 snaps as he’s worked back into the lineup. Anyone actually hoping to start him in Week 8, should also double check that he’s even officially activated, although he is expected to play.
But the real question with Burfict (if he’s even available in your league) is whether an owner should add him or look to deal for him. Savvier owners have likely stashed him on IR but many leagues don’t grant the luxury of holding extra defenders.
While he likely won’t contribute heavily in Week 8, Burfict was a tackling machine during his sophomore season of 2013. Only once during that season did he score fewer than 10 fantasy points, Week 9 in Miami when he notched just five tackles.
Burfict only has four career sacks, although he has landed five fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and one interception. Playmaking is not his strong suit, however.
When healthy, Burfict is thumper with a career high of 113 tackles in 2013. In a dynasty league, he’s an excellent young prospect who should be able to contribute late this season and should return to form as a top IDP linebacker in short order.
If you have the ability to stash a player for a couple weeks, Burfict is more than worth the flyer, although I would not yet trust him in my lineup until I saw a solid game from him.
